Originally built as a bank in the Roaring ’20s, Sofitel London St James stands tall in one of the British capital’s most prestigious addresses. Within the hotel’s grand neoclassical exterior, you’ll find a far more playful side of luxury that retains the Sofitel brand’s French roots.
The luxury hotel underwent somewhat of a renaissance in 2019 with a more than $20 million renovation. Pierre Yves-Rochon has updated his original interiors with ’60s and ’70s design elements, striking colors (his childhood favorites) and pop art accents.
Meanwhile, on the ground floor, locally renowned chef Anthony Demetre’s Wild Honey has moved in. After 12 successful years in Mayfair that saw the French-influenced eatery garner a cult-like following, its rebirth here seems a natural fit for both brands.
Our Inspector's Highlights
- The bathrooms were the only aspect of each room that remained unchanged by Sofitel London St James’ recent renovations. Elegant tubs, vintage brass fixtures, classic monochrome checkered floors and Hermès products required no improvement.
- Pall Mall street was once the epicenter of city's fine art scene, and the London hotel pays homage to its cultured location with its choice of décor. Look out for a contemporary piece by Scottish artist Elliot Killick portraying a colorful William Murdoch (the engineer who invented gas lighting) — it’s just the spot for the painting to live, as Pall Mall was the first recorded public street to be lit by gas in 1807.
- The marriage of French and British culture is ever-present at Wild Honey. Helmed by chef Anthony Demetre, the kitchen churns out French staples like bouillabaisse alongside British classics, such as custard tarts and ice cream made with locally sourced honey from the Cotswolds region. The restaurant is resplendent in plush velvet and marble-topped tables and offers amazing views of St James, especially at night.
- You can’t visit London without having afternoon tea. Sofitel’s kitsch Rose Lounge serves a traditional spread (alongside a French-inspired version) accompanied by a live harpist each afternoon.
- The city is best explored on foot, and after a long day of walking you’ll want to pamper yourself at the luxury hotel’s SoSpa. The Supreme Pedicure by cult nail specialist Margaret Dabbs is internationally renowned and a must-try.

- Inspired by the rebellious culture of the 1960s, rooms feature playful ornaments, bold geometric print wallpaper, design books and Smeg kettles that add a homey touch. If you’re lucky, you may even score a room with Pierre Paulin’s iconic Mushroom Chair, the creation that propelled him to design stardom.
- For incredible views of Waterloo Place, Pall Mall and a steady stream of red buses zipping past, opt for a bright and spacious Prestige or Junior Suite.
