Mexico’s Riviera Maya, stretching south from Cancun along the Yucatán’s Caribbean coast, is one of the world’s great vacation destinations. It is one of four luxury resorts nestled within the 620-acre master-planned Mayakoba community, which has been dubbed “The Venice of Mexico” for its elaborate network of canals carved through limestone, linking its natural lagoons and mangrove forests.

Rosewood Mayakoba is composed entirely of villas and large freestanding luxury suites, all with private plunge pools and some with outdoor showers. And upon arrival, you are taken to your room by teak motor launches with direct access to private docks. Rosewood Mayakoba has a tropical fantasy feel, and includes several islands connected by bridges, with all rooms on the water, either secluded mangrove lagoons or the ocean.
Common areas of the luxury resort — including the Casa del Lago pool complex, shops, restaurants and the spa and fitness center, which is located on its own island — have a sleek, modern design, and the overall result is a tropics-inspired paradise.
Sense, A Rosewood Spa, a private island of wellness, this 17,000-square-foot sanctuary has 12 lagoon-side treatment rooms and eight private spa suites. The ultimate Riviera Maya spa experience is the Mayan Healing Hands journey where a shaman will guide you through a half-day, traditional Mayan holistic healing treatment.
The sprawling accommodations are more akin to villas than suites. Revel in spacious bedrooms, living areas and, in many, a sun-filled terrace and bathroom with a mosaic tub.
Rosewood unveiled a new adults-only seaside retreat, Aquí Me Quedo, in 2018. It houses three tranquil infinity-edge pools, lounging spaces, an open kitchen for interactive culinary classes, an event space that will double as a fitness pavilion and La Cantina, a Mexican-street-food-inspired restaurant.

Things to Know

Mayakoba is a huge and self-contained complex with a Greg Norman-designed golf course that is well-regarded in Eastern Mexico. It plays host to the only PGA Tour event played outside the United States and Canada, the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.
There is a large tennis center, extensive walking and biking paths, and each of the four resorts (including Fairmont Mayakoba, Andaz Mayakoba and Banyan Tree Mayakoba) has an array of restaurants, beach clubs, bars and spas, all available to guests of the Rosewood.
There is complimentary shuttle van transportation within the community, as well as scheduled ferries linking the resorts.
Tucked inside El Pueblito, an authentic village square in Mayakoba, La Fondita is a Mexico City-style tostaderia. Sample tostadas and fresh ceviche paired with Mexican soda, mezcal, craft beer or a rotating selection of aguas frescas (light fruit drinks).

The Rooms

Rosewood Mayakoba is an all-suite resort. The major differences between suites at this property are their locations, either on the lagoons, the spa island or the ocean.
There are beachfront suites that open directly onto the sandy beach and there are overwater suites that rest on stilts like something out of the South Pacific.
All have a contemporary Mexican feel inside, with lots of exposed wood, tile and stone. The luxurious suites are roomy with large living areas, outdoor sitting spaces and oversized bathrooms that come with sizable walk-in rain showers and deep-soaking tubs.
All have outdoor heated private plunge pools and many have outdoor showers as well. No matter which suite you choose at Rosewood Mayakoba, all enjoy a high degree of privacy.
For that ultra-luxe, home-away-from-home feel, book into one of Rosewood Mayakoba's seven spacious villas. The Restaurants

Casa del Lago is the main resort eatery, serving a lavish buffet breakfast with numerous Mexican specialties and fresh juices, then a casual lunch before transforming into a more formal Italian restaurant for dinner.
Agave Azul fuses Chinese and Japanese cooking techniques with the traditions of northern Mexico.
Punta Bonita is the dining venue at the beach club, alongside the swimming pool and overlooking the Caribbean Sea, with indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant serves lunch with an emphasis on ceviche and street foods.
In the larger Mayakoba complex, you can find more dining options at El Pueblito, a colorful square that resembles a Mexican village. Visit La Fondita for tostadas, ceviche, mezcal and agua fresca.
At Rosewood’s adults-only Aquí Me Quedo beach club, La Cantina, serves Mexican street food favorites and Caribbean fare. Try tikin xic, an achiote-rubbed local fish encased in banana leaves; memelas (handmade masa tortillas) topped with wood-smoked pork belly; fresh ceviche; and agave-filled cocktails.
